Are we too internationalized in Eindhoven? Is this happening in other cities too? We arrive at interesting insights when we launched the magazine “150 years Living in Eindhoven” these days. We asked our international community what we could do for them to integrate better into our society and stay longer? Their response was mindboggling and uncovered yet another level of modern city’s vulnerability.
In the reigning political, economic and speculative reality it is lucrative for a town to focus on pleasing those who come from abroad for a couple of years. After all they bring talent and extra productivity. It is good to have them and often these new residents bring in fresh cash. It is therefor a strategic move to make them feel welcome. The longer they stay the better it would be, in theory, for the economy. But analysis reveals that people tend to leave within a few years…Why?
We asked our visiting students and expats about their challenges and interests.
In Eindhoven our local population has important problems to find proper housing. Waiting lists for rental homes are long, up to 8 years. It is therefore surprising that the visitors have everything taken care of. Keeping a housing shortage for locals drives up the costs of housing and living, which is seen as an economy of growth. Shortage for expats and students however would keep them away and this is not lucrative. Is it all again just economics that rules? How does this money based focus on internationalization affect the community as a whole?
*What do you miss then?*, we asked during the presentation of the magazine, which we presented in English too in order to get newcomers to engage with our roots. The surprising answer was “there is no local stuff to enjoy. Where is the local culture in Eindhoven?”.
Indeed, everything seems concentrated on engaging with the foreign people, including presenting a wide choice of things from their original home culture. All the local elements have disappeared. “Even our local architectural herritage”, states editor in chief of the magazine Peter Tholen. The local alderman, Mary-Ann Schreurs, said that this was “due to the economic success of the city, motivating it to modernize its herritage”. Old cities with their historic centres had, according her, suffered poverty and hence did not have a chance to destroy their historic properties in order to replace them with modernism.
So the richer you are as a community the less engaged you are with your roots? That is an interesting viewpoint….and highly disputable….
In Germany, France, the UK, Italy or Spain people can enjoy the local atmosphere in cities. There is the local food, local drinking habits, local language, local architecture, local climate. In Eindhoven we have the international diversity and rain. That’s it. There is nothing else according the people consulted. This is one of the reasons people get bored and leave again after a few years, as stated by themselves. They go to Berlin, Barcelona or London. That is an interesting conclusion. What we are proud of as a city seems to be also our mayor handicap. Our excessive focus on internationalization….
Who makes the difference?
According to the visiting population the nightlife in Eindhoven was boring. It is gradually changing, but not because of the locals. It are the contributions of foreign people who introduce their own initiatives to combat the absence. The local people are too occupied with surviving in an economically adverse climat in which they hardly can rotate their homes, have difficulties to find a job, feel financially blocked by excessive taxes, imposed financial responsibilities, social securities and limited career options. It is a huge contrast with the international community that gets all the facilities, is well paid and has a large potential of time, need, motivation and means to deploy themselves into the city.
“Rather than helping the foreign population we should help the locals”, became the overall suggestion. The lack of opportunity these locals have due to the regulated shortages seems to reduce their engagement to social life. “We are motivated to do things with our lives here because it is all new,” students state, “and share WhatsApp and social media to help each other”. Locals don’t. They are reluctant to engage out of fear to loose social benefits. Or they feel competitive jealousy among each other caused by the shortages and lack of opportunity. Their individual or collective comfort zone and autopilot is limiting them to do things in a different way….
This observation was also relevant for foreign residents someone stated. “I have been living here for five years and had never been in this expat center”. Also foreign people tend to engage with what they like at first sight and then stick to it without creating regular change in their habits.
The vibrant livelyness of introducing a game or challenge has to be focused therefor on the creation of awareness that there is diversity to engage with while getting people, foreign and locals for equal, to step out of their comfort zone once in a while and try something new.
Local government says it does not want to stigmatize people and wants to treat them all as equals. But is this true? There is a distinction between the facilities and motivation of the local population and for those who visit. From an economic point of view these groups are perceived differently and treated accordingly. There is no equality, not in the investment nor development of opportunities for people who are long term residents. All effort seems to be focused on the growth of new people from elsewhere because of the fresh cash they represent.
The international community even offers voluntary work to see if they can make a difference for the locals. It was amazing to come to such insights. How vulnerable is a city when it depends entirely on the influx of money from elsewhere? How vulnerable is a city when it’s herritage is destroyed and its old culture eliminated, and with it its attractiveness for everyone? And: “How vulnerable are people and communities who easily get fixated by their comfort zone?”. How can this be changed? And with what effects on the human beings themselves, the society, economy and local culture?
STIR Foundation is focussing on core human values in which regional resilience is achieved by engaging all citizens into these values. It is referred to as “awareness driven regional cocreation”. Such insights demand further research and most definitely progression in the social inclusion for the wellness development of the entire community. True equality is not just reflected in true equal opportunity but also in the stimulus to make use of it. The opportunities have not been taken away by the arrival of international people but through the speculative governance over its local population. It is the international population that helps the community restore its old values and engage with new ones in a true potential identity crisis.
For STIR and our mission it has been an eye opener and an interesting challenge to connect the two worlds into a culture of interaction and progression, based on true, authentic local value creation, recognition and sharing. This may be the biggest justification for the introduction of a local city currency.
The city of Eindhoven considers itself member of the global community. Nevertheless it is difficult for foreigners to integrate into the local Dutch society. To help them we develop various initiatives focused on showing them how much we value their presence and our interest to develop our future together. One of the initiatives is a magazine about the evolution of this town from small industrial provincial township into a community of global relevance.
The magazine will be released in September 2017 together with other retainers of foreign talents.

Eindhoven (Holland) 12.12.12 at 12.12 a small group of students, age 17 and 18, taped their own video message. It is destined at their own generation in Europe asking them to take also “responsibility for our own future” and meet in 2013 in Hungary.
A challenging call was formulated to meet in the course of 2013 and joinedly discuss and step up their vision for a strong self sufficient Europe and unite together to make the best of it. The recorded videomessage can be seen here and will be distributed across Europe. It will be used to invite students and their institutions to team up and come to a purpose driven encounter in which “our common future” will be defined and expanded further, taking this 121212 encounter as a first stepping stone.

The students’ encounter started at 09.00 a.m. in Fontys Highschool with scholars from both the ROC Highschool and Fontys Eindhoven. An open discussion followed on general issues that concern us individually and all together. This discussion will be summarized on video too. It was impressive, Topics that were dealt with were:
- Multicultural society – the need to adapt to a region, learn the language and show commitment to contribute to the region’s prosperity. There was a sharp disapproval of the growing aggression and a call for tougher punishment measures. Local languages and cultures should be respected even in a broader context when dealing with a united Europe. Shari suggested that we should try to understand each other better even in communication as interpretation of the same words can be different by different cultures.
- Crisis – a strong need was felt to recover stability in terms of jobs and opportunities. The lessons learned from history and our past should be taken seriously. Those who misused the system (bank and government officials) should be punished severely. Willem-Jan: “We accept to take our responsibility and even take our losses as long as we can be confident that these same mistakes and missteps are not taken again”. Banks and governments should develop an ethical responsibility and code of conduct.
- Responsibilities – every single person is him and herself responsible for their own future, not government or some institution. We should show solidarity with the Greek, Spanish and maybe consider one single European government to establish a balance with China, Russia, USA, etc. It is not about money only.
- Sustainable societies – this should be our common goal, not economies or growth. Arjen: “Sometimes one step back means that you can go forward”. Governments should not accept lobbies out of self interest from eg. oil companies but accept change and invest in using technology for our self sufficiency and sustainability.
- Willem-Jan: “We need to learn to live and work together”

The openness and transparency of these students was heart warming while they all really had significant views and something to say. Their worldviews had been developed through international visits and projects.
Coach Wim Grommen added that there are 5 basic issues that need to be attended always to create a stable, sustainable community:
There is no money in this list and examples were given of communities that develop prosperity without using money.
One of the two girls, Veerle, proposed that the group would make their own videostatement for the 2013 event. One of the students already had one prepared. He also supplied the one-liners at the start of this blog:
“Do you want to change the world we live in today? Are you up for the challenge of making the world a better place to live in? Do you have perseverance, courage and will to reach your goals that will benefit society? The Europe of Tomorrow challenge is the event where you should show your unique talents and share your knowledge, skill and experience with others.
Playing a key role in your team and show your uniqueness that will make the difference! It’s about what you stand for, what you want and how to reach your goals. Share your belief, passion and enthusiasm with others. “Together we can change the world forever”
Making the difference starts with believing in yourself.”
The statement was received with applause and it was decided to use it here and on the forthcoming event site. Veerle took the lead in defining a shorter message specific for the video, the “call to their own generation”. After some group discussion the definite version was written on the whiteboard. Then this co-creative group decided to make the statement together in front of the camera…….
Conclusion 12.12.12 of these students:
All:”We do not have a choice, we need to change our economies and societies into sustainable self sufficiency, applying innovative technology and vision by working together and eliminating misusage of power that blocks this progressive transition.”
This was the admirable conclusion in a morning’s debate of a small group of European 17 and 18 year old students, the “next generation”. It certainly gives the satisfying feeling that our future is in good hands with this generation. It was questioned if students across Europe would have a similar sensitivity? So the challenge was formulated for the 2013 event to check this out and get them to react and join.

Thanking all those who participated today in this small but significant event, also part of the global “Day of Interconnectedness”, we certainly hope that we have created a stepping stone for a great event in 2013 and beyond.
What will happen to Europe (or USA for that matter)? Will we find ways to remain united or will we fall apart again. Will history repeat itself or ……?
The Euro? Will is remain a strong currency or will it die a rapid death after just over a decade of its existence? Will we remain living in centralized urban structures? Or will food dependencies create a new exodus to the country side? Or will we learn how to create eatable cities? What is the role of money, business enterprises, governance, science, education in our Europe of Tomorrow?
All these questions will pop up in the minds of the European student teams when they play the game “entrepreneur of your own life” with the challenge to propose their own future for Europe.
It will not be easy for them to make up their mind. They will be challenged by the existing institutional powers which will try to “sell” them their own current world views. Scientists will provide contrasting information while visionary intellectuals will walk around and speak in public about society, risks and chances. But out of all this the students will have to make up their own mind, their own vision and present it to the world.
Will they go for a technology driven world full of robots or green self sufficient do it yourself culture? Will they go for a global solution of a patchwork of fragmented communities? Or both?
The public presentation of all teams on 15.12.12 will tell. But between idealism and realization there is often still a confrontation with present day reality. 2013 will surely be used to make steps to bridge those realities and make things happen, not because institutions want this but our upcoming generation. They will stand in the middle of everything and will get support of the wise elderly who will use their knowledge and networked influences to make change happen. This may be what the Mayas anticipated when they made their calender: a new beginning on 12.12.12, not by war or disaster but human awareness, youthfull creativity and the applied wisdom of the 5th dimension.
Personally I am looking forward to it very, very much.

Putting Planet, People, Profit, Passion and Progress into Practice
Recently we played the entrepreneurial “City of Tomorrow” game for the first time. In the STIR foundation we support the idea of integral human development as expressed in the chapters 15 and 16 of my free book last year, not just the rational side of it as our system is educating our children today. As Sir Ken Robinson so beautifully stated in his much applauded TED talk “the current education systems kill creativity” and Mitra shows in his “hole in the wall“, children have a much higher self-learning ability than our schools appreciate or even stimulate. Yet despite the famous anthropological and anthroposophical views and knowledge on the development of the human consciousness through spiritual, emotional, physical and rational experiences, the system remains the system, locked up in bureaucracy and self supporting prejudice.
We see that current educational formats serve a paradigm in which politicians see the human being as a little robot in the machinery of money driven/dependent economies of growth. Such robots need to learn how to behave like robots within a system, brainwashed about the importance of money, a job, debt, fashion, consumerism, the state, their dependence on the system, etc. The learn to calculate and write a letter but nothing about the importance of social relationships, feelings, spirituality, sustainability or responsibilities.
The paradigm that we support is totally opposite which is why both are difficult to match. The way a complex human society is structured in either paradigm differs enormously which is why the current educational system will sooner see our propositions as a threat to them rather than an opportunity. It is even worse than that. The current education system has no identity of its own because it is chained in dependence to the money which allows it to exist. This comes from central government which dictates the normatives that the schools need to comply with. So the education system has hardly any opinion of its own, just a hierarchy controlling that what is done is done according to the guidelines that allow them to stay alive financially. They are themselves expensive robots in a system.
So we are not seen as a threat to the educational content (who cares?) but for their financial continuation. That is why the system remains closed to all influences from outside, even common sense.
If we cannot change the system we can in fact stand next to it. We should never forget that even the most locked up human organization consists of people. And individually people do become aware of the need of a new society and other ways of education. Some, not all, are willing to use this personal awareness and influences to take action within the structures in which they are employed. They become the internal transformative hero’s that link already with change and seek internal opportunities that make a difference.
We positioned our initiatives on human awareness right at the place where the young adults would leave school to start their life in the real world. Our program is called “entrepreneur of your own life“, linking the increasing requirement of entrepreneurship in the old money driven economies with the self-leadership and sense of responsibility in the value driven society that we are trying to develop. We asked the high schools to allow us to give their students a view into real life with a bit of our counselling. It is also in the interest of the school to pay attention to this even though they find it difficult to let the real world enter their world. When we propose to provide a low cost bridge through our game they become enthusiastic.
We had done one of such days already before in a multicultural setting trying to show the tremendous opportunities of cultural diversity in a community if you choose to make the best of it together. It had been a great day . Now we were facing a highly technical setting with 500 students in two groups.
One of the coaches, Jules Ruis, suggested to make the day into an adventure and the students into hero’s. Overnight he developed a simple game but with great educational value. It was based on economics but could easily and secretly be changed into buddinomics by me.
The ingredients of the game are:
- a large bunch of students 17+ years old
- technological innovation companies that show their innovations
- coaches that carry specific information
- a bunch of camera’s
- a value system in exchangeable cards
We played that day with about 200 students that started without knowing much more than that they would have to collect information at the stands of the enterprises and the coaches that walked around as wild cards. They had been teamed up with people from different years, whom they did not know personally, and the elderly student was made team leader.
They had to assemble the team, work together towards the end of the day, trying to figure out what they had to do to win? During the evolution of the day and every encounter with a coach the complexity of the game would rise, requiring the teams to perform and place the product exhibitions and information into new perspectives.

The end of the day was spectacular from an awareness point of view. It was amazing for us to see how self-leadership and adaptability got these youngsters on their way and how fast they managed to adjust their views with new input. At the end of the day they were allowed to present their views in public and with cameras present. For the highest years present the presentations were key because they were invited to continue the game for another year. Their prices:
- a job
- a scholarship
- a starting capital for a new business
The effects of the game had not just affected the students. The high school had become so motivated that it started to open up for reorganization and further partnership with the foundation and others. The game will be played now at least twice a year and every year again with all the students. While we do so we are going to step up the challenge every time inviting the students to deal with real life complex problems within the simulation of the reality of the game.
The business enterprises also started to readjust their activities and organization inspired by the game. Most found each other during the game to partner up in purpose driven ventures. They also committed to further invest in the initiatives led by the foundation and based on local for local cooperatives between government, technical innovations, education and science, social innovation.
And even the local government representatives were so enthusiastic that they proposed to open up their structures for more student involvement and participation. At the end all participants will become partner and judge of the final game of all students: defining their own city of tomorrow, based on their own home town and for which they can take responsibility themselves with what they have learned at school and are triggered to learn by placing their knowledge into their daily reality, simulated in complexity by the game.
The entire process is sponsored by the partners to maintain our independence and avoid any client/supplier relationship or chain dependencies. This way the game can be purpose driven in which the virtual reality transforms into reality.
Expanding our ambitions:
On 12.12.12 we now wish to play the game for 4 consecutive days in Eindhoven (The Netherlands) with students from all over Europe. The game will then be called “Europe of Tomorrow” giving already away what the main topic of the event will be. The game will be combined with an international congress on sustainable progress. It will again be great fun to see how our young adults will react to the modern reality and eventually change the world through their own new levels of consciousness and adaptability.
