The United Nations has been using the Brundtland definition for sustainable development ever since it was published in 1987. When I needed one for myself I found that particular definition to be useless to me. I needed something for which I could take personal responsibility right now and every day, and invite others (persons and institutions) to do it with me. My own awareness development had made me arrive at this fundamental definition, based on the intense choices I had to make in my personal life. I expected humankind as a whole to come to a point of having to make those same choices. This definition was helpful for me and now shapes the development of Sustainocracy:

“Sustainable human progress is the continuous collaboration between people and institutions to co-create a healthy, vital, safe and self sufficient human society with and within the ever changing natural environment in which we live and act.”

Key in this definition is the relationship between genuine and proven key human values, our motivation to co-create our wellness together and our relationship with our natural environment. It places responsibilities within our own selves, not outside nor with the future. We are not just responsible for future generations through the possible interpretation of future realities. We take responsibility today by adopting a proactive innovative attitude towards a growing perception and understanding of true quality of life. By taking care of our responsibilities today we also take care of our common future.
